I-Mode Glossary |
- CDMA - Stands for Code Division Multiple Access. It was used by the military use over 30 years ago. CDMA is a multiple access technique, which uses code sequences as traffic channels within common radio channels.
- GPRS - Stands for General Packet Radio Service. It is a extension of the GSM specification also known as 2.5G. This is not a continous connection as it transmits data in short bursts. GPRS data speeds up to 115 kb/s.
- HTTP - Short fo Hypertext Transfer Protocol - The standard language that electronic devices connected to the World Wide Web use to communicate with each other.
- PC- Stands for Personal Computer. A computer which is based on the of the original IBM microcomputer.
- SMS - Short for Short Messaging Service. The most popular service which GSM provides. Allows subscribers on a GSM network to send messages of upto 160 characters.
- TCP/IP - Short for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. A set of rules that tells computers how to exchange information over the Internet. Other Internet protocols like FTP and HTTP sit on top of TCP/IP.
TDMA - Stands for Time Division Multiple Access. TDMA networks are operated in the USA, Latin America, New Zealand, parts of Russia and Asia Pacific. The GSM network uses TDMA. A digital wireless telephony transmission technique.
- USB - Universal Serial Bus. A reltively new hardware component to electronic devices which may one replace the serial port. A connection standard for quick and easy device connection to a computer that supports up to 127 devices per USB interface.
- XML - Short for Extensible Markup Language - A markup language to create standard information formats and share both the format and the data on the Internet.
